| Mollie Stone is currently pursuing her doctorate in choral conducting at Northwestern University and while serving as a conductor at Chicago Children's Choir. She received her master’s degree in conducting from Westminster Choir College and her bachelor’s degree from Amherst College. In 2001, while serving as the Graduate Associate for the Amherst College music department, she received a grant from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation to create a DVD that helps singers and educators to learn and teach black South African choral music in the oral tradition. She then received another grant to study how South Africans are using choral music in the struggle against HIV. Mollie gives workshops and lecutres on black South African choral music across the country, and is proud to work with organizations like Yes Is A World and Village Harmony to raise awareness about the beauty and power of black South African choral music. |
BACK TO SOUTH AFRICA--2009, August 5th-27th Mollie is returning to South Africa to create another DVD and continue her research on choral music and HIV! MOLLIE AT ACDA--2009, Winter Mollie gave a workshop on her DVD "Vela Vela" at the ACDA National Convention in Oklahoma City on March 4th. *Check out a list of references on black South African choral music and Mollie's work on South African choral music and HIV in South Africa MOLLIE AT ACDA--2008, Winter Mollie gave a workshop on her DVD "Vela Vela" at the 2008 ACDA Eastern Division Conference in Hartford in February. MOLLIE AT MMEA--2007, Spring Mollie gave two workshops on her DVD, "Vela Vela", and one workshop on her work on South African choral music and the struggle against HIV at the 2007 MMEA Conference in Boston on March 22nd & 23rd, and at the MMEA Conference in Portland, Maine on May 18th. BACK TO SOUTH AFRICA--2006, Summer Mollie was awarded another generous grant from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation to return to South Africa in 2006 to study how choral music is being used in the struggle against HIV. MOLLIE AT ACDA--2006, Winter On February 17th, 2006, Mollie presented an interest session on Vela Vela at the 2006 ACDA Eastern Division Convention in New York. |
